When COVID-19 hit, we wanted to remain connected to folks in the Bering Strait and other communities that hosted learning circles or were planning them. We sent a care package to every person who attended either a learning circle or our training of facilitators. This included 140 people in 11 Alaskan communities.
We created a short questionnaire to hear what people thought about the packages and got some positive feedback. Most people (92%) said they read the card about non-demanding acts of kindness. Half said they shared the “You Matter” messages of kindness with someone they know well, and 23% said they shared it with someone they don’t know well.
The next care package reminded people about information included in the Support for Youth learning circle. It included an information card, snacks, games, and activities for the recipients to do with youth: Uno, sewing kits, berry buckets, and conversation starters with questions for different age groups.
In the feedback survey, 4 recipients of the TWY package responded to What was the best part of getting this package? by saying in some form that they now had the opportunity to engage in conversations with the youth of the community, with 3 of them specifically referring to the conversation cards.
We added Local Steering Committee members and village-based counselors who were interested to the list of care package recipients for this next mailing, which focused on emotional literacy and listening well.
Council members, youth leader advisors, coaches, church leaders, librarians, paraprofessionals, bilingual/bicultural teachers, coaches, and VPSOs were nominated to receive care packages. Nominated recipients were encouraged to opt-in to receive more care packages in the future.
Care packages are now sent to people who have “opted in” to receive them. We develop the theme and contents for each care package with the Local Steering Committee.
A good night’s sleep can be the difference between despair and hope. We included items to help and remind recipients to get good rest: Ear plugs, decaf coffee, sleepytime tea, hand lotion to help you unwind, and a snack you can take with you out on the land for some daily exercise.
It’s never too early, or too late, to work towards wellness. And, you can help young people get out on the land, exercise, and take good care of themselves.
We included some goodies to remind recipients about the importance of healthy living: a deck of cards, healthy snacks to fuel our bodies, a fitness tracker to stay on track, buckets to pick fresh berries, fishing lure, bug repellent for when adventures out on the land, and more! We also included some tools and tips to help recipients and the young people in their lives healthy and happy.
Those who attended virtual PC CARES last year and signed up to attend it this year were also invited to sign up for care packages. This increased our reach by close to 100 recipients.
The next package was about Reaching Out to Youth to Show You Care. Communication is important, and you can show someone you care by showing up, sharing a kind word, or just noticing something s/he did right! Caring helps to build and maintain strong connections. We can all help young people just by letting them know you are there for them, offering a listening ear when they need it, or giving encouragement.
We included some goodies to remind recipients about the importance of reaching out to youth to show you care: some cards to share with thoughtful quotes, healthy snacks to share, a fidget spinner pop toy to keep hands busy and calm the mind, affirmation cards, as well as some tools and tips to help you remember the impact you can have with everyday kind gestures.
The next care package was about Safe Homes. It is important to make sure that all potentially harmful items are kept either locked up or out of reach of those whom they could harm. We included a medication bag with a lock in order to make this possible. Locking up your medication is an easy step toward keeping loved ones safe. We also included some treats and some other helpful information, tips, and tricks for keeping your home safe for you and your loved ones.
The next care package was about building connections with youth. Positive relationships between youth and adults, family members and other mentors offer support, guidance, and also help young people make healthy decisions. You can make a BIG difference by finding time to talk with (or just be) with a young person you care about. You can just join them where they are ‘at’, or start a conversation, such as: “What do you know about where your name came from?” We included conversation cards to help people ask the youths in their life to hear what's going on and listen to their answers. We also included activities such as playing cards to encourage spending time with young people in one’s life.

Finding Balence

With this final Care Package, we wanted to remind people of the importance of a balanced life, in four wellness areas – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual—which are closely interconnected with each other. By managing each of the four wellness areas, once can increase positive outcomes in the others.
